Wow wow wow, this day could have not played out any better. Milford Sound or Piopiotahi, is a fiord on NZ’s South Island.Apparently this area gets just under 200 days of rainfall a year... but we were blessed with the clearest, brightest, beautiful day.

It took us a long time to decide whether to make our own way to Milford Sound or Take a coach trip. Normally we prefer to go it alone, as you have more freedom to stop and explore but I would really recommend going with a tour. It’s a long drive from Queenstown and was nice to be able to sit back and let someone else guide for the day.

We went with the tour company Go Orange which I would definitely recommend - if you use the website Book-me, you can get a discount. Our tour guide Ellie was amazing, and so so knowledgeable. It took four hours to reach Milford Sound from Queenstown, which sounds so long... but you stop off at different beautiful locations and Ellie positivity overloaded us with so much knowledge of the area.

We even got to see a Kea bird on one of our stops, apparently they have the intelligence of a 4 year old... the bird was chasing everyone’s feet and pulling up car window wipers, so take that as you will.

Reaching Milford, we boarded the boat straight away. I was in total awe of the scenery, the waterfalls cascading down the mountains are incredible. The boat pulls up as close as possible to the waterfall getting you close to the action and giving you a free shower. Our boat made it’s trip through the fiord and out to the open ocean before turning around and taking us back.

If that’s how the day had planned out, we would of been perfectly happy. But we were lucky enough to have some visitors... joining us from the vast ocean were five wild dolphins, completely taking the attention from the scenery. Instead everyone on board spent the next 15 minutes watching these beautiful mammals weave and dive through the waves created by the boat.

It was the perfect end to our trip, I couldn’t of wished for a better day!
